Clydebank Asbestos Group congratulate Gil Patterson
We have known Gil from the time he became a list MSP, and he has shown himself to be a staunch supporter of this group. During his previous tenure, he always made himself available when required at any time he was requested. He was almost an ever present figure at the various functions, civic receptions and other such things.
We as a group wish him every success in his new role as a majority elected MSP, and look forward to his continuing support.
As someone who has known Gil over the past few years, I am sure that he will have the good grace to accept that as a group, we are sorry to have lost the services of the previous member Des McNulty. Des was a wonderful supporter of this group, but the will of the people in a democracy must always be first, last and always.
I am certain that Gil will be of the same type, someone who believes that the victims of these horrible asbestos related illnesses must receive every possible support and we look forward to working with him.
Before closing, it would be remiss of me not to mention another person who lost out in the election.
I refer to Bill Butler, another great supporter of our group.
Bill was the person who was responsible for processing the damages bill through the Scottish Parliament, something that is now law. He fought long and hard to achieve this, gained the support of all parties and has left his mark at Holyrood.
We as a group would offer our congratulations to his successor, Bill Kidd, and together with his colleague, the aforementioned Gil Patterson, look forward to working with him in our efforts to see justice for all of those maimed, poisoned and killed in industry.
Always remember, the workers did not poison themselves, they did not deliberately harm themselves.
It was all about their employers failing to provide proper protection.
