Welcome to Clydebank Asbestos Group’s online memorial wall. This page commemorates the lives of people who have died as a result of exposure to asbestos and also those who fought tirelessly to seek justice for those affected.

We hope that our online memorial will complement the International Asbestos Memorial which sits in the centre of Clydebank in the shadow of the Titan Crane in “Truth and Justice Square”. The memorial was unveiled in 2015, designed by internationally renowned artist Jephson Robb. It remembers the countless people worldwide, known and unknown, who have died from asbestos related diseases.

Part of the artist's vision is that the memorial remains incomplete until there is a global ban on asbestos. However, many people continue to suffer because of the deadly legacy of asbestos and families often ask that their loved ones be recognised as part of the International Memorial. We hope that our “online wall” will create the space for that recognition and that the online contributions will be seen as an integral part of the memorial.

Douglas Anderson Peddie 01/09/1911 – 25/07/1970

A great husband to Susan and father of three boys Douglas, Adam and William, Dougie will always be in our thoughts. As a founder member of the Lomond Roads Cycling Club he will be remembered by the many local cyclists on the three lochs trail. He was taken too soon by the shipyard disease of Asbestosis.

John Davie 03/08/1913 – 04/10/1988

A man who helped others, enjoying joinery projects for friends and relatives.
He spent most of his working life in John Browns, notably working on the QE2.
He retired to Dunoon where he continued working until he was 70.
With friends, he would walk the West Bay each day. They were known fondly as ‘the last of the summer wine’.

Jim Breslin 27/9/1927 – 3/3/1991

In Loving Memory of Jim Breslin.
Our dad Jim lived his life in Clydebank, was born and died there. He was taken too soon aged 63 due to cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis from his work history as a joiner in the shipyards and Turners Asbestos. Husband of Nancy and father of four. You struggled on dad as long as you could.

Raymond Gordon 08/05/1944 – 17/09/2008

We lost our beloved father and husband shortly after his retirement, following a brief illness. His passing was sudden, leaving behind a family who adored him – children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren he never had the chance to meet. Though his time with us was cut short, his love and legacy live on in all of us.

Hugh McLachlan 19/09/1924 – 11/12/2014

Born in Clydebank, Hughie worked as an apprentice boilermaker and journeyman in John Brown’s for most of his life.
He helped many sufferers of asbestosis complete application forms for compensation.
He too, suffered from the debilitating nature of asbestosis.
Although gone, Hughie’s kindness and love will never be forgotten by friends and family.

Patrick Hynes 23/04/1929 – 26/5/2020

Our father Patrick Hynes was a wonderful father of seven children-grandfather and great grandfather. He was always a very happy and cheery man and enjoyed singing and playing his accordion. He was loved by his late wife Sarah and married for over 50 years. You could not meet a kinder and more caring person who would light up a dark room. Respected by everyone and truly missed by everyone.

Agnes ‘Nancy’ Smith 12/12/1932 – 15/01/2024

In loving memory of my mother, Nancy, who spent her life in Clydebank. A talented cabaret performer and the most passionate of dancer, mum never truly stopped dancing. Known for her warm, sociable nature, she brought joy to everyone she met. A beloved mother of three and grandmother of three, mum is missed by all who knew her.
