We were very pleased to go to the Clydebank FC game at Holm Park this Saturday to do some fundraising for Clydebank Asbestos Group.

People diagnosed with asbestos-related conditions can claim a compensation lump-sum from the government where they haven’t already received compensation from their employer. For some asbestos sufferers, for example for those whose employers (and their employer’s insurers) have gone out of business, this is the only compensation they will be able to receive.

Clydebank Asbestos Group and Unite Retired Members have helped local pensioners claim over £1 million in in life-changing disability benefits. On Friday 7th August, a civic reception hosted by Provost Karen Murray Conaghan was held at the Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel to celebrate the success of the project as we have reached an impressive milestone in claiming over £1 million for pensioners.

Marie McNair MSP has secured a commitment from the Scottish Government to remove the compensation time bar for people with certain asbestos-related conditions.

We marked IWMD last Friday, the 24th of April. A large crowd gathered at the International Asbestos Memorial in Truth and Justice Square where we heard tributes, laid wreaths and held a minute of silence to remember those who have lost their lives due to asbestos.

CAG mourns the loss of campaigning friend Tony Worthington MP. The death of former Clydebank and Milngavie member of parliament Tony Worthington was met with great sadness by everyone associated with Clydebank Asbestos Group; board members, volunteers and staff. It is difficult to quantify the contribution he made over a very long period in office and during his retirement. He will be greatly missed.

On the first week of March, we hosted an exhibition in the Scottish Parliament, which delved into the history of Scotland’s asbestos legacy and highlighted to MSPs the asbestos and silicosis issues that we are campaigning on. We were able to speak to a number of MSPs and even First Minister John Swinney said hello!

On 16th March 2026, Douglas McAllister MP called an Adjournment debate in the House of Commons about the Compensation Act 2006, and how it is currently inadequate in providing justice for victims of asbestos-related lung cancer.

On Saturday 14th of March, we were privileged to attend commemoration events honouring all those who lost their lives during the Clydebank Blitz. The events marked 85 years since the devastating WWII attack on Clydebank, which claimed many lives, and left thousands of people homeless.

It is with great sadness that we were informed of the death of the highly respected founder of Clydebank Asbestos Group, David Colraine, who passed away at home on Saturday, 17th January.

On Friday the 12th of September 2025, staff, volunteers and supporters of CAG were delighted to attend the first ever Scottish Asbestos Conference. Members’ coffee mornings have become an important fixture in the CAG calendar. Our latest coffee morning however was a little bit different – it was held in the new Clydebank Museum! The new Clydebank Museum was opened in July 2025 in the basement of Clydebank Library. CAG’s annual International Workers Memorial Day (IWMD) event took place on Saturday 26th April.

CAG travelled to the House of Commons on 24th March to support a public hearing on the legacy of Cape, a former major asbestos manufacturer now owned by Altrad.

We had a very sad start to the year with the news that our friend and colleague Kate Ferrier passed away on 31st December.
