Silicosis

Silicosis is a long-term lung condition caused by breathing in large amounts of silica-dust over many years.
Silica is a natural mineral found in stone, rock, sand and clay. When these materials are worked with, dust is produced which can harm the lungs when breathed in. People are usually exposed to silica dust in occupations such as construction, demolition, stonemasonry and cutting, mining, quarrying, brick and tile work, worktop manufacturing and sandblasting.
Silicosis can take a long time to develop, so it may be years after exposure to silica dust that the symptoms start. The main symptoms include a persistent cough, persistent shortness of breath, weakness and tiredness. These symptoms can get progressively worse over time. Other conditions that have been linked to silica dust exposure include lung cancer, COPD, tuberculosis, kidney disease, autoimmune conditions and arthritis.
