Scottish Asbestos Conference 2025

On Friday the 12th of September 2025, staff, volunteers and supporters of CAG were delighted to attend the first ever Scottish Asbestos Conference. Held at the Corinthian in Glasgow and organised by Digby Brown solicitors, the event brought together people from the medical, legal, political and charitable sectors who work with those affected by asbestos. We heard from some fantastic speakers and had the opportunity to meet others who are involved in different aspects of asbestos work.

First up to speak was Professor Kevin Blythe who shared about current research into asbestos-related disease, Marie McNair MSP and Douglas McAllister MP then provided a political update and Euan Love of Digby Brown then discussed the challenges mesothelioma sufferers are facing in low-exposure cases. CAG Strategy and Development Manager Rachel Gallagher then had the opportunity to share with all in attendance about the important work that CAG is doing directly supporting asbestos victims and campaigning on their behalf.

A highlight of the event was hearing from New York lawyer Brendan J Tully who represents mesothelioma victims from all over the world. The focus of his talk was on talc, and how this commonly used product can be contaminated with asbestos. He discussed several cases where his clients were exposed to asbestos through contaminated make-up products. His talk was very interesting, and it was great to hear about how his legal work is helping female asbestos victims, who typically have less success with civil damages claims.

Reflecting on the event, it was really worthwhile for us as a CAG team to spend an afternoon away from our usual work, to increase our knowledge on asbestos issues and to be inspired others and the work that they are doing. Thank you to Digby Brown for organising the first Scottish Asbestos Conference – we hope it will be the first of many!
